DONATIONS

For more than 185 years, the Rosminian Fathers have been the custodians and managers of the Sacra di San Michele. Their presence has contributed to the growth and maintenance of this sanctuary as they have carried out preservation and enhancement projects, undertaken cultural activities, and reinforced the place’s religious and spiritual identity.

Theirs is an essential, constant, and continuous commitment, made possible thanks, above all, to the generosity of so many donors: our faithful, pilgrims, and visitors, who, over the centuries, have contributed to keeping the beauty of this monument intact.

EXHIBITION AREA PROJECT

A new area for our time together!

The main work we want to realise concerns a new lift connecting the floors of the Old Monastery. The aim is to make the currently inaccessible areas accessible to people with disabilities or reduced mobility.

The work is financed by Fondazione CRT as part of the "Santuari e Comunità" (Sanctuaries and communities) project, which supports innovative proposals that combine restoration and recovery work with cultural promotion actions for the local socio-economic development of Sanctuaries.

As part of this project, the urgent need has arisen to create a waiting room that would be welcoming for people using the lift, a meeting point for all of us who enjoy the Sanctuary enhanced by an area for temporary exhibitions and displays.

The Fondazione CRT supports the "Exhibition Area Project" by doubling the amount of each donation received.

Help us create the room and follow the development of the project along with us.

Your support is invaluable!

ADOPT A STAIRWAY

Together, one step after another, from the stone to the stars.

From the entry level of the Abbey, you reach the famous “Scalone dei Morti” (“Stairway of the Dead”). Having scaled the first steps, on the left you pass a column more than 18 metres tall that supports the floor of the church above. To the right, an outcrop of rock that is lost in the opposite wall emerges. Until 1936, in the central niche, some monks’ skeletons were preserved - hence the name of this stairway. Long ago, this “atrium” was frequently used to bury famous men, abbots, and commendable people of the monastery. Having reached the top of the Scalone dei Morti, you cross the Portale dello Zodiaco (“Zodiac Portal” - 1128-30), a Romanesque work sculpted by Master Nicolao, a famous architect-sculptor from Piacenza. The portal is called thus because the door posts in the façade facing the stairway are sculpted on the right with the twelve signs of the zodiac and, on the left, with the australis and borealis constellations.

The stairway is composed of 20 steps, which require continuous care and attention, like the rest of the structure. With your contribution, you can support the restoration and conservation efforts and symbolically associate your name with one of the steps of the Sacra di San Michele: join us on our journey!

For the “Adopt a Stairway” initiative, you can request a personalised certificate with your name, or one or more persons to dedicate it to, whenever you wish. This way, you can make a gift to your loved ones through an original, generous gesture that is translated into concrete assistance for restoring the abbey.

To join the ADOPT A STAIRWAY campaign, click on a step of the staircase and make your donation!
